Textiles Recycling Program
Our clothing drop associated with the St. Pauly Textiles company in upstate New York is going strong! At this time of year especially, we encourage residents to bring unwanted but useable clothing and bedding to the transfer station for this worthy cause. The items accepted include clothing, jackets and outerwear, shoes and boots, bedding (sheets, blankets, comforters, pillowcases, but no pillows), curtains, and even small, washable stuffed animals. The items get sorted in a central location and are distributed worldwide where the greatest needs exist for humanitarian relief. The town gains a small monetary benefit in exchange for providing the service. No permit is necessary to participate in this program. Please bag your clean, dry donations and tie your bag before pushing it through the slot in the shed, located in the lower parking area of the transfer station. If you know of a local family going through rough times and in need, please let them know that we can open the shed and make the donations available as requested. Questions? Call 255-9775.

No Construction and Demolition Debris will be accepted at the Gardiner Transfer Station, and Electronics Waste Recycling will no longer be accepted. This is due to NYS safety and building compliance issues which prevent the Gardiner Transfer Station from accepting certain hazardous items.

Homeowners will be permitted one large contractor bag or one garbage can with debris per trip for $6.00 per bag or can. No loose debris will be accepted. Residents are encouraged to bring construction material to UCRRA's New Paltz depot, where they are better equipped to receive this material and where better prices are offered.

Commercial C&D should be brought to UCRRA on Clearwater Road in New Paltz, located near the ball field, BMX track, and the New Paltz Transfer Station.

Organics Waste Diversion
The Gardiner Transfer Station & Recycling Center is no longer able to accept any compost materials from the community. However, we strongly encourage residents to set up their own compost stations at home. It is an easy way to reduce household landfill waste and creates nutrient-rich soils for future gardening. Every ton of composted waste saves around two tons of carbon from being released into the atmosphere. Backyard composting can be as simple as a small pile of leaves, or as complex as you like – from a stand‐alone bin to a 3-bin-system with varying compost stages. Check out great tips and instructions for DIY composting with these guides (here, and here) provided by the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency.

Clothing Drop Box/Recycling Shed
Gardiner now offers a clothing drop & recycling shed where your old clothing is sorted for reuse and textile recycling. We accept shoes, sneakers belts, purses, blankets, sheets, pillowcases, drapes, and stuffed toys. Please, no rags, fabric scraps or remnants, pillows, toys, or household goods. This is only for intact textile/fabric items. Keep your donation clean and dry in a tied or closed bag.

Did you know?

  • 1 pound of clothing averages about 3 pieces: 3 shirts, 9 pieces of kid’s clothing, or 1 pair of shoes

  • 2,500,000,000 pounds of used clothing ended up in land fills last year alone

  • The average American throws away about 68 pounds of clothing and textiles per year, 99% of which can be recycled.

  • The textile recycling industry, with some 2,000 companies and places like Gardiner help remove 2.5 billion pounds of post consumer textile product waste from the solid waste stream annually. Taxpayers pay by weight  for all waste in the solid waste containers. The more that is recycled, the more we save.

  • Textile Recycling employs approximately 10,000 semi-skilled workers at the primary processing level.

  • Few communities have textile recycling programs, and as a result, about 85% of this goes to landfills.

What is UCRRA?
In 1986, the County Legislature obtained authorization from the State for the creation of the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency for the purpose of developing, financing, and implementing a comprehensive Countywide solid waste management program. New initiatives to close existing landfills like Gardiner’s dump were undertaken by the NYS DEC and strict requirements for the siting, construction, and operation of new facilities were enacted. UCRRA emphasizes reuse of material, reduction of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW).

Currently, we’re in contract with UCRRA to manage the removal of our transfer station’s waste and recycling.   Solid Waste removal is charged by the ton plus the cost of pick up, while recycled material – paper, cardboard, compostables, bottles, cans, reusable items, etc -- is removed at NO cost to the Town.  The result is obvious: by keeping recyclables out of the solid waste stream, the Town saves the thousands of dollars.

Please recycle because Gardiner Recycles.

The Town Saves Money plus over 30 trees and 6 cubic yards of landfill and container space
The Town of Gardiner is poised to save its taxpayers thousands of dollars this year by initiating a program to remove and recycle 50% of the weight associated with household trash.

One Ton Of Recycled Paper Saves:

  • 7,000 Gallons of Water

  • 4,100 Kilowatts of Electricity

  • 60 Pounds of Air Pollutants

  • 17 Trees

  • 3 Cubic Yards of Landfill

  • 7,712 Gallons of Oil

Recycling Numbers
There are recycling numbers at the bottom of the plastic bottles and packaging, including feed bags, etc. These numbers represent what kind of plastic that bottle falls under and helps determine whether that plastic is considered safe or not.  Numbers 3, 6, and 7 are not accepted. Each recycling number has a particular classification to it to determine whether, relatively, it is safe or extremely dangerous. Click for more information about different Recycling Numbers.
